Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association

Interview with Jerry Hetzel

Jerry Hetzel didn’t really want to do this interview. He doesn’t seek publicity and he doesn’t particularly care to be in the limelight, despite the fact that he has won multiple awards for excellence in his profession, which happens to be growing potatoes and vegetables.

He does, however, work very hard at being a good farmer, and he does see the value in sharing ideas and trying new ways to become more efficient at raising quality vegetables. He admitted he has learned a lot by reading articles
and research reports, as well as talking with fellow growers and researchers.

So Jerry agreed to answer some questions about how he grows potatoes, and in particular, how he goes about planting his potato crop. His comment was, “if another grower benefits by reading about the way we do things, I would be happy with that.”
