Promote good driving habits for teens

It seems that no matter where you go, you cannot escape from people using their cellphones and other portable electronic devices — even while driving. According to a Pew survey, 40 percent of American teens say they have been in the car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger. Using your phone while driving greatly increases your risk of crashing. The Federal Communication Commission suggests taking these steps to help prevent these types of tragedies from occurring with teen drivers:

• Give your teen driver clear instructions that texting while driving is prohibited. Explain to them that taking their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, could cost them or someone else their life.
• Lead by example and never use your phone while driving. If your children see you pull over to a safe place to talk or text, they will be more likely to follow your behaviors.
• Be informed and tell others. Know the dangers of texting and driving and share them with your teen.
