Vegetable Crop Update – Late Blight

August 13th, 2019 | Posted in: Crop Updates, News

Updates provided by Amanda J. Gevens, Associate Professor & Extension Vegetable Plant Pathologist, Interim Co-Director of Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program, UW-Madison, Dept. of Plant Pathology

Late blight was confirmed on tomato from the southern part of Monroe County on the Vernon County line today. Symptoms included watersoaking of foliage and substantially infected fruit with some sporulation. We will be testing for clonal lineage when the sample arrives tomorrow and I will send out an update as appropriate. To summarize to date, we’ve had late blight confirmations from Wood, La Crosse, Portage, and now Monroe Counties. In all cases tested, thus far, the clonal lineage/strain type has been US-23. Please be sure that susceptible tomato and potato crops are protected in these areas to limit new infection and further spread of such a potentially devastating disease.
