Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association

Interview with Jerry Wright

In March of 2005, Jerry Wright of Idaho Falls, Idaho was hired to serve as the initial CEO/President of the United Potato Growers of
America. The former president of Embasa Foods (later renamed Authentic Specialty Foods) had a long track record of success in the business world, and expectations were very high.

Wright did not disappoint. Fall potato acreage was cut by 7% to
952,000 acres, the lowest level since 1957. As a result, grower returns are
the highest they’ve been in the last ten years. A substantial portion of the acreage decline has been attributed to United’s business plan, part of which was an acreage bid buy
down which was executed in the spring.
